Rui Santos - ALGAE Coordinator

In 1964, at the age of eight, Rui O. P. Santos was afraid of swimming with the Laminaria. His father patience, the thrills of spear fishing and the excellence of a few teachers helped to develop a taste for scuba diving and marine algae. In 1981 he completed his honors thesis on the seaweed flora of Peniche at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon; worked on the management and valorization of seaweed resources at the National Fisheries Institute (INIP) and at the Engineering and Industrial Technology Laboratory LNETI) for 12 years; completed his Ph. D. thesis in 1993 at the University of Dalhousie, Halifax, Canada; was appointed Assistant Professor at University of Algarve in 1993 and Associated Professor in 1999. In 2005 he got the Habilitation in Marine Ecology at the University of Algarve. Santos has supervised 12 Post Docs, 11 PhDs and 36 Masters. He has 135 scientific publications, 100 of them in journals listed in the Science Citation Index. He has been involved as a coordinator or as a participant in 10 European funded projects and over 30 national funded projects. He participated in the evaluation of projects and grants for EU-FAIR, COST, DFG-Germany, NERC-UK, NSF-USA, Fondecyt-Chile, KNAW-Holland and FCT-Portugal. He is Associated Editor of Estuaries and Coasts and member of the Editorial Boards of Marine Environmental Research and Marine Ecology. He is the father of the two most wonderful kids and would like to have more time for diving and filming the Laminaria (and the seagrasses).
